Frog problem

I have a small wildlife pond that I made a year ago.  All has been going well and I have seen newts, numerous snails and invertebrates all apparently happy in their new environment. The water is clear and there are lots of oxygenating plants (elodia?) in it. However, I have had several dead adult frogs over the past few months. I have found them floating and, apart from the bloating from being in the water, without any obvious sign of anything wrong. Can anyone help with what might be going wrong please?

Hi unichild. There is a link here that may throw some light on your sad discovery:

  • Thank you, Ladybird4, that's an interesting article, and I had wondered if it is simply an uncontrollable natural phenomenon.  It is very sad.  Last year many of our frogs fell prey to magpies - this year that hasn't happened, but something else has got them!  I just hope they return next year and breed successfully. They are such lovely creatures.

I love them in my pond too. I'm not sure if it mentions in that particular article or whether I read it elsewhere but apparently large adult frog losses have little impact on the next breeding season so don't be too despondent.
