What is going on with these plants?

imageimageimageimage

Hi I am brand new here and am the new owner of a house with quite a bit of existing landscaping.  I don't know much at all about the various plants so I will need a lot of help just determining what I have, and then what might be the various issues with some of these plants.  I have hired a service that has sprayed my shrubs a couple of times, but given that some of them look like the below pictures, I am not too happy with whatever he is doing.  He has an agronomics degree, so I would think he knows what to do, but so far I am not seeing great results.

In any case, here are a few pictures of various plants.  What are they, and what could be some possible causes of the poor health they seem to be exhibiting?

  • That hosta in the second pic is well and truly scorched, I'm sure it would be better off in a little shady spot. What has he been spraying the plants with? More to the point, why?

  • I have no idea what he sprays with.... I believe when I moved in there was a Japanese beetle problem with quite a few plants, but I dont know what the "general"  spray is.  I am quite a neophyte at all of this, so I dont know if shrubs usually NEED a spray of any kind... are they generally hardier than that and I should not be paying a service? I am trying to weigh paying someone for things to just be done "right"  with not wasting a bunch of money.  Each shrub spray costs in the $130 range.  Its about an acre yard with shrubs and beds in a full 360 around the house.

I do have full irrigation, but I guess you are saying its not a water problem, but a too much sun problem for that hosta?  I have not been running the irrigation a lot lately, so I am sure all of the plants could use a bit more water.

  • Firstly, I would definitely get some water on them. The first and last photo's, are they hydrangeas? Same with them, get them into a little shade, but more importantly, give them all a good drink. Whereabouts are you hifiaudio177?

hifiaudio. As you quote prices for treatment in dollars I guess you might be in the US. This is a UK site so it may be in your best interests to try and find an American gardening forum. The information you have been given by Brickman is correct - the Hosta would be better in the shade. As for paying someone for spraying - which may also have caused that type of damage - I would sack him.

Cacoethes: An irresistible urge to do something inadvisable
  • Hi - my guess is that you are in the US?  Whereabouts are you?  Most of us are in the UK, so may be unfamiliar with some of your gardening conditions.

That being said, I suspect that the hosta is suffering from lack of water - most of them can cope with sunshine as long as the ground is moist.  If the soil is at all dry they need shade.

I'm guessing from your post that you are on the other side of the Atlantic where there is a Japanese beetle problem. This forum is mostly used by people in the British Isles so we can't really advise you about this particular thing.

As to hostas, they really prefer to be in shade so it might be an idea to move that plant to a place where it won't need sunscreen......and give it some water.

  • Ah yes... sorry I didnt realize this was mainly UK.  I am in Nashville, TN.

  • Ok, now I'm really jealous of you living in Nashville image

regardless of where you garden, nothing will survive without adequate water, so get that irrigation system on, you will be surprised what a difference it makes over the next few weeks.
