Today is a sad day indeed.
I have been harvesting plums from a a prolific tree for the last 4 years.
The tree is (was) in an unusual position situated on a small industrial estate surrounded by workshops etc... and to my horror when I went today to collect some plums the tree had been felled!
I cannot understand why this has happened as the tree did not interfere with any buildings whatsoever!
I am assuming it was cut by the council.
Anyway, I managed to salvage some plums from the floor and I would like to know if, it's possible to grow a tree from the plum stones.
I think this would be wonderful as a legacy to the tree itself.

If the plums are ripe you'll get a tree but it might not be exactly the same.
In the sticks near Peterborough
They were ripe.
Don't really mind so long as there is a possibility of growing trees.
Hmm, the sadness of seeing a tree felled for no reason.
It brings to mind the poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins called Binsey Poplars. I remember from my schooldays. It begins with the lines
"My aspens dear, whose airy cages quelled and quenched in leaves the leaping sun, are gone..."
and ends with something like
"If we but knew what we do
when we hack and rack the living green
that when we mean to mend her we end her..."
and so on. I remember it imperfectly, but it sums up so much of what the human race is doing to the earth and it was written about 150 years ago.
