Poor apple crop

I moved into a new house last year that had an apple tree in the garden (see pic). Plenty of apples last year, plenty of blossom.

I looked up how to prune it, and pruned it as suggested on many websites but getting rid of 'leaders', any branches that were rubbing together and clearing out the middle of the tree so that it there was plenty of air getting in.

Have we just had a poor year or have I done something incorrectly?

How would you suggest I prune the tree this year?

  • That sounds possible. It's only our second summer here, so I'll have to keep an eye on that. Thank you.

Assuming it is not a tip bearer(were all the blossoms at the end of branches?), All new shoots should be cut back now to two thirds. I did all mine a fortnight ago. This encourages fruiting spurs.
