Hi,
Does anyone know what this tree is?
It's in the garden of my son's house in Stratford.
Tree appears to be old. Current height about 25 feet.
Large glossy green leaves typically 30 cm long and 10 cm wide.
I should be grateful for help identifying.

Could we have a photo of the whole tree please, also a branch so we can see the way the leaves grow. A photo of the trunk/bark would be good too.

Here we go:
In the first picture it is the tree on the right in the foreground. There is an apple behind. There is a fair amount of dead leaf and branch in the tree (now removed).
In the second picture the unknown tree is the only plant in the picture.
Sorry for the poor photos. I am not at the house at the moment and these are picture taken after my son had just moved in with no desire to feature the tree particularly.

maybe one of the species rhododendrons?
Not totally impossible. There are certainly some with similar leaves. But the leaf habit is not characteristically drooping like a rhododendron. Nor can I find any rhododendrons so tall.

Have you seen any flowers or fruit at all? They would help a lot in identifying it. Thinking it might be one of the large leaved species of Magnolia.
Haven't seen either. No sign of fruit at the moment. My son has only lived there since 15 Aug.
Hm, magnolia grandiflora possibly or something similar. I hadn't thought of that.
