Diseased Shallots and Onions?
Hi all,
I seem to have problem with my raised beds that i cannot identify. Both my shallots and onions are affected by a disease or organism that seems to burrow a short distance into the onion or shallot. They seem to leave almost like a barnacle mark. If one removes the first few layers it can easily be removed but thats quite a chore with 100's of shallots! I know this sounds odd but Im not even sure they were damaged whilst in the ground or instead when drying, (I don't seem to remember the marks when i pulled them, but they may have been) This is the second year this has occurred and im really really keen to identify and eradicate if at all possible.I asked the same question last year but we struggled. Im now armed with more photos!
Thanks in advance
Dan

First thing next year is to break the cycle and NOT grow them! However, I've looked at onion fly damage and been through my pests and diseases books twice for you. Nothing seems to match! Still looking.

I know, but its like this...I grew them the first year (ive just finished year 2) and just planted what I was given. But I pickled a few with a superb recipe from Delia. They were out of this world. I did the same this year, and even had an evening where me and my Mrs were standing at the sink for two hours crying peeling them!
They are fantastic but I get you, i may have to grow in the borders rather than the raised beds!
Thanks for looking - really grateful if I could sort it somehow. Had some of my onions in storage and resorted them today, even some of them have it on. Some are affected some are not. Its only on the aliums of some kind, beans, peas, beetroot, and asparagus all untouched.
Thanks again,
Dan
