Mixing carnivore plants with cherry tree

So recently I bought a sunburst prunus avium, problem is, the bugs and critters love it just as much as I do. They're eating the hell out of it.

So I bought a venus fly trap, cape sundrew and a pitcher plant to 'defend' my cherry tree.

The tree is in a large bed, with garden lights around it (which doesn't help in terms of attracting bugs) and I've noticed the leafs are taking a fair hit, considering I've had it for less than two weeks! Something had a pop at the bark too..

I've tried treating it, putting spiders on it and so forth but these particularly determined little black things (cherry black fly possibly?) are having a real go at it.

So I've decided to place 3 of these plants in pots around the tree in the hope that any bugs will be eaten by it and reduce the amount of damage the tree is taking.

The tree is about 3 years old/6.5ft tall.

I have no idea about gardening, any thoughts?

Relax.  Pour yourself a drink and sit in your house and watch TV for a bit.  The tree will survive the bugs.

  • Hang some bird feeders around your tree to attract blue tits and other small birds - they'll eat the bugs for you.

And don't worry about cherry leaves at this time of year - it's autumn - they'll be falling off soon and you'll be sweeping them up to put on the compost heap.

Haven't got a compost heap?  Now there's something you can do in the garden at this time of year - start a compost heap image
