What is this tomato?

These plants were sold to me as Gardener's delight, but are quite obviously mis-labelled. However these tomatoes are delicious, quite soft and fleshy and slightly elongated. Any ideas of what variety this could be-I'd certainly buy it again.

Hi sandyv. They could be Golden Cherry.

  • Toms have been weird this year. My suppliers sent me three different yellow ones and some were like the picture - Sungold cherry, they were labelled, but I'm still not convinced.

I've got sungold  and it's certainly not that. Sungold was my fave this year, judging by the plants I pick from as I walk down the polytunnel.

  • I think it's 'Yellow Plum', which is a cherry type, but slightly elongated.  Just looked down my lists. I found it struggled to ripen, but I accept that could be my fault somehow!

Curious that several people have been hit byt the confusion. Like Hortum-cretae, mine are slow to ripen.

  • I wonder if the seed plants which the wholesale suppliers breed to distribute the seeds to retail merchants were accidentally crossed with a more dominant variety last year?  I've grown Galina which is a yellow Siberian cherry variety which crops until it gets frosted and is very vigorous so is a potential parent.

It sounds likely that something went wrong at the production level. Now I wonder if I am able to save some of the seeds from this plant and if it will breed true.

  • If not, try Galena from Realseeds - it tastes lovely and is a great cropper as I mentioned above.  All the varieties available from Realseeds will come true (ie they are not F1 or F2 hybrids.) image
