KT53,  you like your plastic or metal edging ....for me it is awful image !   Plastic disintegrates; metal is sharp and rusts and never looks right.  . Some of your edging "is still solid"??  All mine is "solid" .  Yours need replacing.  Mine don't.  My bespoke concrete edging suits my needs perfectly.

To be honest I'd prefer not to use edging, but when I did need to use something I could only afford plastic.  The one I got I bought from B&Q and it did a perfectly adequate job, that job being to stop the grass running into the borders.  I've ripped it out now because I've had the front lawn removed.  The plastic edging was still flexible, which I was actually quite surprised by.  I haven't reused it as B&Q no longer do the same stuff and I would need a lot more if I was to edge the lawn in the back garden.  I can't afford over 200 feet of good quality metal edging so using it in the future is pretty irrelevant.  I don't like the look of concrete edging between lawn and border, so really it's down to individual choice.

Most of the metal edging I have seen is designed to be set slightly below the grass level, so if installed properly should barely be visible.  I don't like the corrugated plastic, or corrugated metal edging as I don't see how you can possibly get a decent edge to the lawn with either.

I suppose the irony is that the edging against the front borders is now block paving, which like your concrete won't need replacing.

when I put in the concrete I created gaps .....plastic sheets which meant lengths or curves can be easily detached .  the chisel simply helps with the separation.??

The use of plastic to separate sections of the concrete is inspired!  As you say, easy to remove a damaged section or if you want to change the line, and it leaves a neat edge to work to.

My plastic edging is not corrugated and it is smooth. It is invisible being black. It has been down for many years now and will last for many years more. Each to his own!

I expect you could paint the edging too Verd - there are concrete paints available, although I'm not sure if you paint them on after or add them to the mix when you make it initially. You could have a greeny colour to help it blend in if you didn't want the grey concrete. image

The problem with concrete paint is that it flakes off after a time. I took advice to paint the floor in the greenhouse and now it looks awful! Apart from the fact that when you water the floor in the summer to provide a bit of humidity the water just sits on the surface rather than seeping in! Live and learn!

  • I use this.  https://www.everedge.co.uk/   Expensive but does an excellent job and is easy to install. I can mow over it and plants spill over where I want them to.

  • I've always used block pavers as well - bit more work, but never had to replace or move them.  I suppose the major benefit over plastic / metal edging is that the mower wheels can run on them rather than compacting the soil in the beds.  Maintenance free / easy once done.

I am considering putting some cost effective edging for my lawn. Any recommendations?  Do you mow over those?

Saw some in ebay but not sure of quality.

Hi Bala have you consider aluminium edging instead?
I came across this company whilst searching for lawn edging inspiration - they produce aluminium lawn edging...worth considering - cheap and flexible and will last a long time.

    The thread's 5 years old.
I hope you don't have a connection with the company you're promoting [although it's showing all the hallmarks]
If so, that's an advert and has to be paid for. Contact the site using the links at the bottom of the page.
