The growth all seems to be coming right from the base.
Might it be some random Elaeagnus used as a rootstock for a variegated top ( now removed)?
I've just read the whole thread and seen the bit about thorny spikes, none of those mentioned have thorns have they?

@nutcutlett - i don't believe i have ever seen any flowers on this plant
@busy-lizzie - i will need to try crushing and having a good sniff !
