Help please!
Moved into a new property and the garden is totally overgrown and looks like a wilderness. We've been out and had a good look, trimmed back the excess grass and have a good idea of the problems. These include;
Big hole in the lawn where pond used to be (now a hole full of glass, rubble, etc)
Red ants in about 10 nests (approx 5-6in tall!) dotted around the lawn
Various overgrowing trees and plants.
The big issue is my wife and I don't drive so getting soil, etc is a big issue. We have mower, strimmer and various hand tools
We want a basic garden with somewhere for the kids to play (this is their first garden) so we don't want to membrane and cover in gravel.
Any advice greatly appreciated

It is amazing how much a garden will recover given a bit of time and attention.
Clean out the hole in the grass. Fill with compost or soil skimmed off your beds and borders. Sow some grass seed and keep watered.
Find out what your shrubs are and prune accordingly. The RHS site has good advice on pruning. Try us on the forum for ids.
No experience with red ants but I would suggest knocking the nests down and using ant powder.
Mow the grass regularly, perhaps put down an autumn feed to help it along. Come the spring you can fill any hollows with some compost and resow. Use a weed and feed on the rest.
And enjoy!
No need for a car. You can get your topsoil delivered to the door.....Wickes and similar vendors are a good place to start.
