sick tree

imageHelp! This little guy seems to be dying from the top down. I don't see any bugs. It's been planted for a couple of months. Any help is appreciated.

  • Whereabouts are you?  Have you had a dry summer?  How much watering have you been doing?

Mid-summer's not a particularly brilliant time to be planting a tree - they need a lot of care and attention.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Looks like it could be suffering from lack of light. I see its in a corner. The sun may not hit it on that side till late in the day. If that is the case it can stay damp and can suffer scorching when hit by hot sun.  Can't be 100% but that's somewhere to start.

might some animal be "spraying" on it?

From the photo, I'd go with Picea Albertiana Conica and I'd say about 0.5m tall? so about the right height for , erm, "spray"

whatever the cause, it's never going to turn into a well-shaped tree now. The brown bits won't leaf up again. I wouldn't keep it.image

  • Spider mite could be the problem it likes dry conditions and a tree planted then not watered enough could be infected. The problem probably came with the plant if it is only new and as mentioned above will never recover to a nice shape. This type of tree is prone to that kind of problem and when my tree got similar symptoms I put a hose on it on spray for a couple of hours a day which seemed to get rid of the mite. It did bush out in time and looks quite presentable now.
