how to speed up ripening of figs
in Fruit & veg
It's outdoor fig tree brown turkey growing in west facing position in the kitchen garden. Some of the fruits don't seem to change colour or size for months, only one of 2 ripen per day when it is warm and sunny.

Some years none of them ripen outdoors. I've just finished eating the ones in the greenhouse......they ripened at the rate of one a day. Soooooo nice. Like eating toffee.
ah, that is too bad. Perhaps most of the crop will be wasted once the cold weather set in.
To beat the blackbirds, I pick them slightly under ripe and put them in the fruit bowl for a day or two and then they are sweet as honey. It's a shame that the harvest of figs is always few and far between!
I've got progress using Italian method of dipping olive oil into the eyes of figs. Or it's because of the record warm weather. Anyway I got six today and with more to come. Worth a try if you got unripen figs on tree!
