What's wrong with my hebe?

Hello everyone. I bought a hebe from the garden centre, bargain corner, it looked in good condition with lots of buds. I brought it home, repotted it into a larger pot. One week later and it looks like this, what’s going on?

I wonder if it was pot bound. Did you tease out the roots? How much watering have you done?
Hi Mark thank you for your reply. Its funny you should say that. When I took it out of the pot, I thought, that looks a bit potbound. As it was very heavy I teased out a few roots but had to stop because my back hurt and I thought Oh I'll just leave it.. I have given it lots of water but it looks like the damage is done. What do you think? Should I lift it and tease theroots? Or will that do more damage?
By "pot bound" do you mean the root was protruding the pot and got damaged when removing the pot? (As oppose to the root having wrapped around itself inside the pot).
Often in bargain bins the garden centre put them there and no longer care for them. It looks to me like the root might have dried out as a result of not being watered. I guess it doesn't matter either way, though. Probably best to leave it alone now, you might damage the root further by trying to tease it out.
Those bits were possibly on the way out already - for the reasons Bob has given - neglect by the GC. I'd snip them out, and they'll get covered by new growth from elsewhere if they don't resprout themselves. The variegated ones can be a bit less tough than the green ones. Nice plant though.

Many thanks Fairygirl and Bob. That's quite a relief to hear.
So should I snip the whole stems off, or just the damaged leaves/buds?
Sorry I’m very new to all of this
Well, when I took it out of the pot at the garden centre, there were lots of very very thin dark brown roots all around the soil.
I’m just worried it’s going to die. So do you think that it’s nothing to do with sun exposure or anything like that? There are fuchsias next to it which are really happy now they have been moved out of the sun (they were scorching very badly before) - so I thought it would be a good positoon for the Hebe.
By the way you might be able to see in first pic, there are qute a few stems of nice new growth, so fingers crossed it will live
Don't worry LDee - we were all new to this at one time too
I'd cut the stems back to a pair of new shoots or buds - or a leaf joint. If you look inside the plant - along the damaged stems, you might see evidence of some new growth. Cut back to that. If you're unsure, just take the dead leaves off - they'll come off quite easily just with your hand. See what it's like in a month or so. If the stems aren't recovering at all, you can snip them off right back to the main stem they're connected to.
Those fine roots are just that - fine roots. As you've potted it on now, they will carry on growing into the new compost/soil in that pot.
It's still warm enough for the plant to make some new growth this year. Keep it in a fairly sheltered spot out of the worst of the winter weather.
It seems quite a decent size, so it should be fine and will carry on growing next year no problem.

Thanks for all of your help everyone.
I cut all of the dead/dying stems back to the base, and left the seemingly healthy ones. However, two days later now and all of the ones that did look healthy now look wretched, and look as though they are on the way out. There are a few stems that looks as though they are very healthy.
what do you recommend? Would it survive if I cut everything back to the base and left the healthy stems?
