POP goes our Acorns

imageWhat is happening to our oak trees?
We live in a small Warwickshire Village, have two young oak trees, (@14 years old). 1 is in the front garden, 1 in the back. they have been bearing acorns for about 5 years now.
This year all the acorns have all been affected by something which has caused them to look more like a green/brown popcorn. As far as I can see, there are no unaffected ones at all.
There is a regular stream of ants on both trees but we can't see how this would be the cause, has anyone else experienced this?
Is there anything we can do to prevent this next year?
