Slugs

I want to make a slug trap for my greenhouse because no matter what I do the little blighters get in somehow. I heard that beer is a good one, but as I don't drink that particular tipple wondered whether diet coke/Pepsi would do. Or any other suggestions would be welcome.

Old lettuce leaves will attract them Patricia.

  • Mmm but will that get rid of them. I heard that they drowned in beer. Once I had them on the lettuce leaves what would I do with them? Ugh of all the creatures in the garden that I can live happily with, slugs ain't one of them and we have no hedgehogs or toads.

  • Think you are right but I wonder if they prefer lager or ale? I've pulled a few pints behind a bar but never knew how anyone could down pints of the stuff. Pity they don't prefer coffee. The slugs that is lol

Patricia - you smash them! Leave the corpses for the birds.

  • I think I would puke

  • You can use milk.  I've done so effectively (I'm ashamed to say), filling up an inch or so in the bottom of a baby food jar.

Otherwise you can buy yeast and just use that as that is what they are attracted to in the beer. It's much cheaper.  I've not tried this though as I tend to use milk.

You can usually buy basic store brand lager or bitter for like £1/ 4 pack.  I think you will only be trapping a few of them though.   Raids after dark with a torch-- then you can drown them, boil them, freeze them or chop/smash them.
