Yarrow

I have a bed of yarrow which is now in its second year. But it has not produced any flowers despite having a good foliage. Any ideas please on what I gave done wrong ?

My yarrow has been very poor in the flower department this year. Not enough sun maybe?

Overfeeding can often mean foliage at the expense of flowers. They tend to like quite poor conditions, so if you have rich soil,  that may be a reason.

  • Thanks Faithful. I have heavy clay which I dig compost into whenever I plant anything so perhaps that's the problem. Not sure what the answer is, but it has spread well so will probably need to dig some up for next year.

  • Sorry Faurygirl. Predictive text has much to answer for!

I grewit in a garden round the corner where we had built a deck . I made a narrow border along one edge and filled it with Yarrow and Sedum. I don't think they were ever fed or had anything done to them image

We're on clay here too - so perhaps it was pure luck that I put them there and not anywhere else!

Found this pic - you can just see the yarrow in the background - tailing off at that time of year. These wertaken in early October.  There's some Verbena Bonariensis in there at the back  too. That borderwas about 6 inches wide, although very deep.

I'm gardening on clay and I have a few round the garden. I find them very variable - some years lots of flower, some years very little. I've some this year in a veg bed with lots of compost flowering prolifically, so lots of food doesn't necessarily stop them.

I think the main thing is they need plenty of sunshine so in a dull year and a slightly shaded position they don't flower. I haven't found much of a pattern yet though, so I may be wrong.
