Protecting a Chest freezer in garden

I have just purchased a 850 x 1115 x 670 mm chest freezer which but need to find a way to move it to my back garden.

I can place it against the back wall of my house (under a window, and between the fence and the garden access door). The only problem is how best to protect the chest freezer.

I have looked online and cannot find a suitable 'box' to cover the freezer (there will be 100mm space between the top of the freezer and my window sill, and 300mm width space).

Do I need to build something to cover the freezer? If so, what materials should I use to be waterproof and to protect from the sun?

Or is there a much quicker and easier solution?

Any advice would be appreciated.

It is very likely the freezer is not suitable for keeping outdoors.  Most are not even suitable for keeping in an unheated outhouse.  They defrost themselves when the weather is too chilly.  Check rather than lose the contents.

If it's not desgined to operate outside you're asking for trouble.

Normal household freezers are not designed to work out doors.  Their electrical parts are not waterproof, and enclosing it in some form of waterproof cover would almost certainly result in it over heating.  Also, they are designed to work in a location which is in the normal temperature range of a house, many won't even work properly in an unheated garage.

Put simply, you can't run it outside. (Assuming you are in the UK, or a similar climate)

As Welshonion, Pete and KT say, it is not worth even thinking about having your freezer outside - unless you live in the South of France or similar and it is a specially designed freezer.

  • Thanks for the feedback all, saved me from potentially destroying the contents.

I do have a shed at the back but completely full at the moment. Checked the specification of freezer and it's suitable for outbuildings so guess I'll need to clear out the shed and utilise that.

    Cheers
