Transplanting hydrangeas
Well as most of you now know I like my gardening and today I spent a lot of time clearing beds replanting and so forth .
well the empty bed i had created now looks sad and I want to fill it with some beautiful hydrangeas problem is as you know it's not the right time so here's my idea I am going to just Bury the hole hydrangea pot and all there by giving me the colour I want then in early spring I lift the plant from the pot take away the pot and drop my newly pruned hydrangea straight back into its old position.
Any thoughts or pitfalls to my cunning plan as always answers on a postcard and send them to BBC box possible 17 only joking cheers lester

I'm about to plant one large, potted oak leaf hydrangea into a new bed, and dig one up and relocate it. Perfect time to plant things
Keep them well watered if it's dry - shouldn't a problem at all.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Quality I thought it was a great idea I have around 20 large hydrangeas to plant out they were left over from a wedding years ago been in pots ever since hiding in the back such a shame my predecessors did not have the ranunculus to do it lol! Jobs for Monday then photos to follow
I have a medium size mophead hydrangea I would like to dig out and give to a neighbour. Can I do that now or do I have to wait till autumn. I would appreciate some advice, thanks
Planting out from pots can be done at any time of year as long as the roots are given a thorough soaking first and then teased out so they spread into the surrounding soil which needs to have been well dug over and improved with garden compost. Keep watered till established.
Digging up established plants and transplanting is best done in autumn when the plant goes dormant above ground. This puts less stress on the roots and gives them time to develop over winter before they have to cope with all the new energy spurt in spring. Water well before and after to reduce stress and help it settle in.
