CLEMATIS JINGLE BELLS WINTER BEAUTY

  • I was hoping to see a reply to Philidendrons post as I have a similar problem.

Bought two healthy looking plants in 7cm pots from Thompson & Morgan which were planted early September 2018. All started well with the stems shooting up to a couple of feet, however come December when tiny buds started form the top leaves started to die followed by the lower leaves, and finally nothing now apart from dead looking stems. The ground is moist and not too wet. Also used some special clematis fertiliser. Anyone got any ideas??

    Hi Chris
I bought a new plant from T  & M and it grew very well through the summer in the ground but unfortunately it gave up the ghost all the leaves went brown and crisp by the end of October. So I have cut it right back and I am just waiting to see what if anything happens. I transplanted another established one 4 years old which had been spectacular but was in the wrong place from the ground and it is now In a very large pot. It has done very well climbing and produced leaves and flowers. The flowers are coming out now but the leaves are going brown, crisp and falling.

If anyone can help us I would love to hear from them too.

I just checked they are not a hardy clematis according to Hull site, I also remember not buying it because of the possibility it was not hardy. (Or too fussy for my lack of skill level and conditions needed).

The Hull site also says it is susceptible to phytophthora rot.

I don't know if that is the reason for your losses, you might need to look it up to see if the symptoms match.
