Butternut Squash: Spreading Skin Blemish

Problem with butternut squash Hunter F1. Symptoms start with a small brownish disc on the skin which rapidly spreads outward, looking like a knot in wood. Each affected area is covered in droplets of pale yellow liquid.

I've never had this happen before. I've done a bit of net searching without success. Is it simply a watering issue or is there a pathogen in play?

The problem is affecting just one (so far) of four Hunter plants in a raised bed.

Any ideas, suggestions welcome. TIA!

  • Sorry, but I think that's blight (Aka black rot).  It's probably all over for this year's crop but if you've thrown out (not composted) the infected ones you might get to harvest one or two before they too succomb.  It's often triggered by damp conditions from a lack of ventilation...

  • Thanks, Bob. Further research seems to bear you out. There's just one plant that seems to be stricken with this lurgy, and it is also showing early signs of mildew. I have to admit the bed is somewhat overcrowded, it's like a jungle in there.

    I shall proceed accordingly.image
