Have I killed my lawn with evergreen?

  • Ripply - don't worry - it will recover - have a look at the photo of my lawn I've just put on Hello Forkers - it all looks dead, but it will recover - just needs the right weather and patience. image

Has anyone ever actually managed to apply the product without scorching the grass?! There's some moss kill in there but more scorched grass I would say. Evergreen 4 in 1 is a liability, horrible product.

  • I've used it on many occasions.  I weigh out the amount needed per square metre and put it in a yoghurt carton, marking the height it reaches with a felt tip.  Then I use this to scatter the product, having first measured out the lawn and divided it up roughly by eye.  I've never had a problem with scorching grass although moss always looks very black.  I would add the caveat that I make a point of slightly under rather than over applying.

I think that Ripply may have been mowing his grass a bit on the short side - some of it looks a bit scalped.  Maybe there were some raised areas - possible ants' nests?

It looks like a combination of factors Dove. That's the 'problem' with Evergreen (in my experience) is that you need the 'perfect storm' of all the variables to make application successful. I used it once having followed the instructions to the letter - or so I thought - with similar results, if not quite as bad, as Ripply. The following year I approached it in a lab-like fashion (sounds like you do too!) and still got scorching. Never again, but as you say, you have had plenty of success and I'm sure millions of others have too judging by it's popularity.

No problems with that or the Autumn fertiliser. I have the Plastic dispersal container for the product and simply walk up and down the lawn at a steady pace.

  • Would it be a good idea to get someone in with a scarifier to do the whole lawn? I was thinking about it previously as the grass was totally overgrown beforehand and then I kept leaving the grass clippings so there is probably lots of thatch. Now might be a good time since it looks dreadful anyway.

I only got my first lawnmower recently (just had a strimmer before) and I put it on the recommended setting, which was the mid-range one. I did think it looked too short but wasn't sure if that was good or bad for the grass. I'll adjust it higher now.

Ripply.  Probably cheaper in the long run to buy a scarifier as you will use it once or twice a year.

  • Verdun, what's mpc? By top dressing, do you mean fertiliser?
