Thornfingers, my garden was FAR worse than that when I moved in. Grass and weeds were up to my waist. We even discovered a large tree stump in the middle of it!
My partner got his petrol strimmer and cut it all, and removed the clippings, which was a lot. I raked out and reseeded a few parts that looked bare. After that, with regular cutting, it quickly turned into a nice lawn. If you start now, it should be fine for next spring. And a lot less work than killing it all and starting from scratch.
Ripply thats encouraging to hear thank you. I have a petrol strimmer so it looks like I'll be starting strimming tomorrow!
Last time I tried to strim it I found it wasnt that effective - I thought about putting the hedge trimming attachment on it to give it more bite - reckon this will work?
I'm glad you decided to save the lawn, Thorn. If you strim it tomorrow, I think in two weeks you could mow it on the highest setting on your mower. You may get in one or two more mows before the weather gets too cold and the grass stops growing. Keep it on the high setting until next spring, then see what you've got. Good luck.
Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

Thanks again for all the advice!
