Please help...what is this?
Hi everyone. I have noticed this on my hawthorn over the last couple of weeks. It looks as though it's killing the hawthorn underneath as its gone all brown.
Its a very thick web like covering and stretches about half a metre in width.
Should I be doing anything to contain it?

Cotoneaster webber caterpillars, more info on the RHS site:

It looks liked the web of Ermine Moth larvae who love to feed on Hawthorn. Have you spotted any little caterpillars on it. I guess a spray would help but I wouldn't use any chemicals. Try 'peeling' the webs away and hose off any caterpillars you see. The Hawthorn will survive.

or let them be, it's nearly all over now, as Ladybird says, the hawthorn will survive. It's all part of nature

Thanks all. Am not an experienced gardener so thanks for the info. I will let them be
A good decision I hate killing things for appearance's sake

Hear hear - the hawthorn will indeed come to no harm.
