My lawn is destroyed by What?

All of a sudden today I noticed this damage to my lawn. It has happened before last Summer/Autumn. What is it and how can I stop it. Photos attached.

    Thank you, will do. Any way to repair the lawn-just reseed?

    Looks like you have a thick layer of thatch, I'd wait a month then heavily scarify, aerate and topdress with a sandy loam. you could then reseed any bare patches.

    Looks like crow damage ( looking for grubs ) to me too. Seems like there's a fair bit of damage there so I'd follow Verdun's advice to help solve the issue. 

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Get rid of leather jackets with nematodes, scarify lawn a little later then you will get rid of crows.

    Not usually crows.  Rooks.  Looks like they have done you a favour!
