My suggestion remains unpopular with the cat people, and may even be illegal!! Make a well know phrase or saying from 'gun' and 'shot'. Just kidding, but only just. I stopped them leaving their calling cards in my front lawn by digging it up and replacing it with gravel.
This one won't go down with those that have cats either but I can see it working and could even be beneficial to someone too.
Buy nappies and apply an advertisement for a local business onto each side of the nappy so that when your cat is wandering around the neighbourhood it will be advertising someone's business for them.
You could charge for the advertising to at least cover the cost of the nappies!
Environmentally friendly and the owner of the cat gets to clean up the mess afterwards.

A cat took to sleeping in the middle of one of my grasses. A few holly leaves did the trick.
