Does it stay or does it go?

Puning my lavender this morning I found this in a clump, almost like lichen, thing is I don't know whether it should stay or go?  Opinion please?

    Harmless growth, but indicative of lack of airflow through the lavender stems (as is the moss).  Looking at the lavender itself, I'd replace it with a nice new young healthy bushy one.

    Thanks Hortum I try to replace some plants every year but didn't get round to it this year, my own fault then! Is it not a bit late now?

    No, not at all. A new plant in there will do fine planted now. Plenty of time to root away and be strong for winter.
