Tall raspberry canes

We are  pruning our raspberry cane’s and some of this year’s growth( next year’s fruiting  canes ) have grown to 8 ft tall, are we ok to cut them down to a more manageable height , say 5-6 ft, at this time of year( September) ?

In a word, yes.  Sideshoots form from the old leaf joints of summer fruiting varieties in the spring and it is those side shoots which will flower and produce fruit, so losing a couple of feet from the top won't result in the loss of much potential crop.

Cutting them back to 6ft will also help protect them from wind damage over the winter.

Thanks for that Bob, we are up in the north of Scotland and were a bit worried about the wind so will do that.

  • I have a Morello cherry tree we planted in 2014 as a young tree it produced fruit in 2015 and very well this year 2016 too. I would like to move the tree as it is near an apple tree the same age . . when is the best time to move the tree. I only want to move it 3 feet . as we only have a small plot. we will prune the apple  also

  • Hi I've just moved into a house which has an abundance of rasberry plants currently with an endless supply of fruit. Does this mean they are Autumn flowering? As I'm trying to work out which method is best to prune them. Some stems are brown but the majority a pinkish colour and several over 6ft. Any advice welcome

  • if they're fruiting now it sounds as if they're autumn fruiting. Cut all the canes down to ground level in February.
