Flowering witch hazel
Dear all,
The witch hazel (jenela) has being growing well all year and has masses of flower buds, but last week they started to open and its beginning to flower fully. Oddly the flowers are now completely yellow, even though they were the orange/red colour early this year when it was flowering when expected. The new growth and flowers are from the graft and not the root stock) Does any one have any ideas why? My other witch hazel (arnold promise), grown in an almost identical location, has lots of flower buds, bud they are not opening.
Thanks for your help!

Mine is flowering too.
Going to be really miffed if that means no winter flowers.
Any idea why? I don't think it will flower in winter too - all the buds have opened!
I agree Pixui,
Can't see how there will be winter flowers too.
Is yours in open ground or a pot?
Mine is in a very large pot - so big I can't move it to the courtyard as I did in it's first years so I don't think that's the issue but interested in any possibilities.
I never let it dry out, feed reasonably and the pot is in a well shaded spot.
Good job the leaves are pretty in autumn or I'd be beyond grumpy.
Any thoughts GW team? (I might give them a separate shout)
Came on to ask this very same question. My Jelena is producing yellow flowers too!
As for blooming early.... My Jelena always starts flowering early around now and carries right on through winter so found no issues with flowering when it should. Never produced yellow flowers before though. I wonder if weather has something to do with it.
I gave my daughter a witch hazel several years ago. It has grown and flowered each year, with very little perfume. This year, however, it is spectacular. Full of flowers and lots of scent.
