Poor cropping

KT53KT53 Posts: 9,016

I'm slowly getting back into veg growing after not doing any for years.  Runner bean crop is good but onion and new potato crops are terrible.

Onions have really put on very little growth, with few more than a couple of inches across and most considerably less.  Spud crop again poor and what did grow broke up badly when boiled.  Going from solid to flour in a couple of minutes.  I can't remember the variety but the pack did say ideal for boiling.

The ground had been used for many years by my neighbour, who sadly died in January this year.  Ground had been dug over and had compost etc added last winter.  Spuds and onions planted where broad beans had grown last year.

Any thoughts on why results may have been so poor?

were the onions planting this spring or last autumn? as my over wintering ones were fine but my spring planted ones were poor due to wet, cold then dry, warm then wet, cold and never quite getting hot summer we've had.

I suspect the potatoes suffered from the fluctuating soil water levels as well

Onions were planted in the spring.  I thought the weather might have had something to do with it.
