Okay thanks Nutcutlet. Not sure about the wildflowers either. They were a gift from the Countryfile show. I may sew them in a pot in the spring. Cheers for all the advice. Not sure what to do with the lupins or mimulus.

They should be UK plants if Countryfile is what I think it is. I'm not a TV watcher so only a vague idea of that

Never grown lupins or mimulus, sorry

Hollie you get much stronger plants sowing snap dragon's now , once they are up  put them in a sheltered spot outside!

I've bought some oriental dwarf poppy seeds "Allegro". Labeled as a hardy perrenial with recommended sowing times of Mar-Jul outdoors. Could I sow some now for a head start?

I've never done autumn sowing before so am a bit clueless. Will stuff survive the winter if it's labeled " hardy" or do some hardy seedlings still need extra care?

I've just scattered some Californian Poppy seeds in the garden.  I followed the instructions on the packet re time of year and the fact that they like to be sown where they will grow rather than transplanted.

I have also sown Wallflowers 'Pink Giant' and 'Sunset Dark Purple' in trays, I'll start them in the propagator and then once potted up I'll over winter them in the cold frame.

Toying with idea of planting some rust resistant Hollyhocks.

Thanks Yvie, I'll wait until next year and direct sow them if they don't like being transplanted. I'm trying to create an area of zingy hot colours with reds and oranges but haven't finished the prep yet (still gathering a collection of plants together, currently all hanging about in pots image)

Sown some helleborus , will  leave some outside in a pot too .just to compare.

Sowing poppies  in a tray , these don't transplant  easy so I section the tray into six or even just three portions . Use a handfork  like a scraper to lift each portion out .transplant in blocks .

    This works for me.

  • WS, I've never had much luck with cosmos in the ground (see below, or they might've been eaten by SS). I had some in a copper-bound pot that did well though.

  • Can I get away with minimum soil prep for seeds sown now?

It's not that I'm lazy, it's more that hardly any of my carefully-sown seeds grew last year as any freshly prepped soil got dug over by foxes, cats. Possibly both. In a gang.  image

If I plant or dig anything, you could guarantee that in the morning I come out to find big holes in the bed, any plants or seedlings flung across the lawn and bulbs lying forlorn. Presumably, seeds get buried too deep or dry out on the surface, depending on where they end up, as they never sprout. All my bulbs have damaged foliage and very few flowers, if they appeared at all.  It was very disheartening after spending hours and a lot of money.

I thought, if I could just scatter the seed around, they wouldn't know...!
