Should weeds be removed when killed with weedkiller?

Hi there,

I have a rather large garden and it is currently the home of thistles, nettles, burdock, bindweed, and other common weeds. I have one section that I plan to seed with a meadow mix, which I am told I can seed as late as October. I have some Glyphosate and wish to kill off the weeds but am unsure if I need to then remove the dead weeds or if they can be left and turned into the ground before I sow the meadow mix? If left will this continue the spread of the weeds?

I know I will have many years battling with the weeds as they have been well established for 10+yrs, and we happen to live next to some wasteland that is full of thistles. I unfortunately was too late to do anything about the weeds before they went to seed so I now have thistle seeds everywhere :(

Any help most appreciated, Amy

first you just have to be sure that they are dead, things like docks, nettles and bindweed have a nasty habit of surviving the first dose of weed killer.

I would get a gas powered weed wand wait for a dry day and burn off anything above ground level and wait a couple of week to see if anything regrows. if it does give it another dose or try getting the roots out manually.

the area that you want as a meadow I would take off the top 1-2 inches of soil (it will be full of weed seeds) and turn over the soil below. then give it water and wait a week, any weed seeds that are there will germinate you can then hoe the area over and sow the meadow seeds from late September till early October
