Berberis...dying?

Hi everyone,

First time poster and incredibly novice gardener so please be gentle! I've recently moved home and have plans to have a container garden (it's a rental). So I bought a couple of hardy perennials, one of which was a healthy Orange Rocket. Planted in a suitably sized pot, watered, fed and kept happy for about 2 weeks. Then went on holiday for 10 days, but gave it a good water before going away having read that they're also fine in dry soil for a while.

When we came back half of it had shrivelled and the other half had white spots. Is it rust? Sun-damage? Other mysterious fungus? I thought it could've been under-watering but the white spots have completely thrown me. Searched online and found nothing like it! All suggestions are gratefully welcomed! Picture attached.

I wouldn't worry about the white spots, all the leaves will drop off for winter and nice new ones next year. 10days is a long time without water in summer. I'd cut off the dead bits, don't let it dry out again and all will be well next year
