Hedge at end of the garden

  • As I understand the law, in the event of a boundary dispute between neighbours / land owners the ruling is a maximum height of 2mtrs whether it be a wall, hedge or fence etc etc.

A hedge can be cut back to a boundary without permission from the owner but the person has to offer back what has been removed to the owner otherwise they are steeling. The owner can legally refuse to take back what has been removed from the hedge and the person cutting back the hedge is then responsible for the rubbish and its disposal.

I find the best way to get any hedge looking good and full is to cut it very regularly and feed and water it weekly during the growing season but stop feeding in early August so that any new growth hardens off properly for the winter.

Cut the hedge every couple of weeks, three at the least even if you don't think it needs doing, do it.

It will fill out very quickly assuming you are also feeding it and watering it weekly too.

Privet hedging is a very hungry / thirsty plant and like any other plant it requires feeding and watering for it to look its best.

Letting branches grow high won't encourage the stems to bush out and thicken so shorten them.   Feeding and frequent light cuts as advised by Cottage should also help.

If you didn't see GW last week, watch it on i-Player for the hedge trimming advice on order of cutting and the shape to cut.

You can't expect the bit shaded by the tree to recover or grow as fast as the rest so be patient.

Thanks for the tips lots to be going on with. I think Ill keep trimming it and remove some of the top so the base is wider and see if that helps.. I did watch the episode on hedges thanks for the advice...
