Drying onions
in Fruit & veg
I am fairly new to growing onions on the allotment. I have had a fantastic crop and have even managed to string some, by watching how it is done on YouTube . My question is whether there is any benefit in hanging the onions, tail down, to dry them, or whether lying them out flat is better. They are drying in a greenhouse.

hi hilerylevan I have been told a few ways but my old mate said lay them all on tressela and cut of most of the leaves and turn them on (made tressels) with slats about 1nch 1and/half slot them in racks and let any sap run out and dry some say to lay flat until all dry , me I do what works for me it hasn't failed yet (((try and make some slats say 5or6 ft long put 4together put 3 cross members to keep all together and screw or nail put on boxes or like I made tressels I have 6 I made that stacks on top of each other hope it helps I have plenty time so I make things to make it easy for me Michael
Many thanks, Michael. I am using the top shelf from a greenhouse plant support thing, which has criss cross holes in ( not explaining that very well!). Anyway, the onions are sitting on the top in the sunshine, with tails coming down through the holes. I haven't cut any of the tails off, but it makes sense, so I'll do that today. I am leaving them for 3 weeks, which I hope is long enough!
