Spoilt flowers petals on white hydrangea heads.

Several of one particular type of white hydrangea has flower petals that are turning brown on an otherwise healthy flower head! Not happening to my pink and blue plants or on Annabelle. I think they have enough water as they have a regular soaking at the base of the plant. They are only in a sunny position for a few hours in a day. Any ideas?

All white blooms look tatty very quickly.  Just think of white buddlia for example.

  • I'm having the same issue, as I live in Scotland I was advised to plant my hydrangea in a sunny spot rather than partial shade, but the ones in my sunniest spots have brown whereas the ones in partial shade are looking better.

Jackie - they're fine up here in sun providing the soil they're in is suitable. The best spot is out of the sun (when we have it!)  during the middle of the day if possible. East or west facing is about right, but it also depends what else is around it. If it's south facing, it'll be fine if there are other shrubs or planting to give it a bit of respite from the mid day sun. It can be hard if you have lots of  new, smaller plants and there are gaps to allow them all to fill out. They're a bit  exposed for a couple of years.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

    Thanks everyone.

Took a spray of the hydrangea to a garden centre today and the guys there said it was just the flowers dying naturally as it shows more on this particular type of hydrangea. The photos you have attached to your responses look more like Annabelle and similar flower heads with smaller individual flowers making one large head which change colour gradually as they age. I would attach a photo of mine if I had the skill!

  • Thanks Fairygirl!  I'm new to gardening.  I'm south facing and put them in my sunniest spot, which gets the mid-day sun! Oops!  Plus my garden is only 2 months old so everything else is still small providing no shelter.  I will move them! Ah well this will make room for the 2 x Azaleas I have my eye on!
