Hedges and pipes

Hi

I'd like to plant hedges in my front garden to give privacy from a busy road. The problem is near to where I want to plants the hedges is a drain pipe, electric pipe, water pipe and gas pipe.

Should I plant hedges here at all? If I can is there a particular type I should use? - I 'm worried about the roots blocking the old drain and also disrupting the other pipes over time.

Generally I just want to plant hedges for privacy so I'm not fussy about what type - I just want privacy and am not allowed to put fences up. But am allowed hedges - its conservation area you see.

Any ideas or advice? Or is this a no go?

If it's the old clay pipes the roots will in time crack through and run along the pipe, it's bad luck you got theses pipes running in the area you wish to plant. I wouldn't plant over the main, could you go a 1mt in front or behind the line.

  • I was thinking of planting the hedges in long plastic pots/trays so that the roots won't interfere with the old drain. Would that work? Is there hedges that can live in large planted pots/trays?

  • Are any of the pipes actually on your land?  If not... get planting!

  • Gosh, that seems like a bit of a selfish suggestion! I wouldn't want  to adversely affect anyone just because I wanted to plant nearby their vital utility supplies! They can't help where the pipes are.

How about bamboo in large containers?

  • Its to be planted over the connecting pipe to the main drain on my land. The drain pipe isnt that far from gelow the surface. Maybe 30 cm. I'm fine with containers even if they stick out a bit just above the pipe. Any type of banmboo or hedge in large containers? Or should i not do containers and just plant?

  • Is there any fast growing thick bamboo or hedge? Coukd i grow from a seed? Or should i buy small plant?

  • Gosh, that seems like a bit of a selfish suggestion

I have a telegraph pole growing in my garden, not placed out of sight when it could have been.  It's right in front of my front window, where was the consideration there?  Until last year we had a tree growing right next to it, that covered it up but also reduced the light coming into the house.  It never affected any of the utilities, inparticular the electricity supply that comes out the bottom of it.

If it's not on your land it's probably far enough away not to be affected by what you plant.  Besides if roots are going to get into the pipes that will probably happen anyway; I doubt you have to walk too far to find a tree in a conservation area!

  • Ok is there any type of hedge or bamboo i should go for that will be ok to live in a pot or box and grow large for privacy?

I believe you can be held responsible for damage to other people's property by your plants including roots.

It is best to take care. I had some holly bushes/trees which had destroyed the clay pipes next door which carried rain water to a soakaway. Fortunately my neighbour is nice, so he repaired his pipes, and I removed the holly plants.

I think you are okay with electric cables. The gas pipe could I guess be pushed aside, but a shrub should be okay. The drain pipe is an issue, don't plant near it. All my trees in the garden are planted away from pipes, I made sure I knew where they were.
