Dahlias 7 feet high ! whats going on?

My Fathers Dahlias are seven feet high (not including flowers) very healthy, but loosing strength in flower stems as growing skyward. South facing full sun, is this normal?

Dahlia imperialis, will grow to 15 foot easily, and has been known to reach 30 foot.
