This plant was grown from a seed brought back from Tanzania last year. It's growing pretty well and is up to about 50cm.But I don't know what it is. Any suggestions?

Looks like a banana of some kind to me, judging by the leaves and growth habit.
banana by the look of things,
I just hope you used the proper quarantine methods and didn't just sneak the seed in within your luggage.
I didn't say any thing when i first so it. But yes it does look like a banana.
