Thanks nutcutlet, I looked it up on google first and there seemed to be a lot of faff about taking the bark off with a sharp knife which I don't want to do if I don't have to.

Thanks Tetley, it's worth a go I think. I've never seen lavender seed, will have to have a look online.

Aym280 I grew one avocado before and was very pleased with it but accidentally left it out in the frost and that was the end of that!

Lou I bought lavander seed in the most unlikely place...Lidl. It came in it's own little mini greenhouse and cost almost nuppence so I bought it...like you do. image It took an age to germinate and the germination rate was rubbish ( I think I got three plants out of it) but they're still here and doing well. I planted them last year so they're still small but it can be done.

Folk on here are very generous too so if you check the seed and plant swap thread you might manage to find a few bits and pieces for your white borders.

Yes I'm not sure about growing lavender from seed, I bought some foxglove seeds which are germinating and also some Eryngium giganteum - Miss Willmotts ghost which are not germinating, the packet suggests putting them in the fridge for a bit.

Also some of the things which are planted in there already lend themselves to division which I can do when they have grown on a bit.

The garden centre had some very healthy and very cheap paeonies in their bargain corner and I bought three big ones for a couple of pounds each. I know they have a short flowering period but I've never grown them before so I thought why not.

I'm setting up my own business at last and leaving the NHS so money is very very tight at the moment. It all has to be ploughed back in and we will be eating beans for a couple of years.
