Burrowing animals

I am an amateur gardener with a fairly large garden and I'm slowly getting to grips with it.  We have LOADS of wildlife (mice, moles, squirrels and a number of pheasants), which is wonderful BUT, my work is cut out for me.  One of the main problems at the moment are mice tunneling under the plants, separating the roots from the earth.   Any advice?

Music,  are you sure it's mice and not moles?

I firm and water plants back into the ground after mole activity.

My money would be on voles.

Thanks so much for all your input.  To answer all your questions, we also have voles, moles as well as mice.  You'd think they would think twice about digging as we have clay soil!  Indeed I tread down on the soil - it just means I must check all the plants each day.  No bad thing I suppose.  Thanks again
