White fungus in soil ?

imageimage

Hi fellow gardeners does anybody know what this is, what could be causing it and how to get rid of it please? I've tried spraying it with fungal spray but it keeps coming back. it is a shaded area of the border, ive cut back some of the foliage of plants to increase ventilation to no success.

Is it actually causing any damage? Autumn is the time for fungi to be active and some are useful in breaking down dead organic material. What you may have is the main body or mycelium of a fungus. The fruiting bodies are what we call mushrooms or toadstools and these are normally the only bit we see. If its not doing any harm I would just leave it alone.

  • Thanks very much, it doesn't seem to be doing any harm, I think I will leave it alone then and see what happens

We've got lots of that in the soil under the lawn in this garden - we've been here several years now and it's not caused any problems - as has been said, most fungi are beneficial as they break down organic matter and make it available to plants. image
