Charentais melon

I am growing melon atm which I think is a charentais. My neighbour said it seems a bit late for them but anyway I have 3 nearly ready and many small ones which may or may not happen. The ones that are ready (ie size wise) are not soft at the stem or smell ripe. In fact they don't smell of anything, so I am not sure when I should pick them. One inparticular is a good size but I am reluctant to pick it. Can anyone help please? Should I just pick it and wait for it to ripen?
