The dreaded acanthus 1
PLEASE can someone here tell me how to get rid of acanthus plants that seem to be multiplying in our garden ?
They are popping up all over the place and I have spent hours digging again and again trying to get every single tiny piece of the roots out but they keep coming back stronger than before. I have tried using concentrated doses of Round-Up on them but I might as well be giving them plant feed as they seem to lap it up and grow stronger.
As there are other things growing close to where they all are, it is impractical to try and put any black membrane down.
This has totally got me beaten at the moment and I have never, in all my gardening years, come across a problem like this. There should be a serious warning attached to Acanthus seeds and plants in garden centres.

if you're going to use roundup use it according to instructions, not concentrated. If you use it too strong the top growth dies off too quickly to allow the poisonous stuff to reach the roots.
In the sticks near Peterborough
It takes a few weeks for the glyphosphate (roundup) to take effect.
Initially the plant puts on a growth spurt with very pale leaves, then dies. It takes 2-4 weeks to work its way through the system and kill the plant.
Very tough weeds may need a 2nd application after 2-3 weeks.

Thanks for the replies.
Nutcutlet - I have previously used Round-Up directly from the states they sell and that didn't work. I then tried making up more stronger doses but that also made no difference. On all occasions, I have only applied it in dry weather. Perhaps there is something stronger than Round-Up out there that I could try.
Whenever I have tried to dig the stuff out, I have gone down maybe up to 3 feet and sieved the soil but still it comes. Truthfully, it looks lovely to see in the garden right now but I just don't want any of the many clumps of it that are there.
We moved to our house just 21 months ago and the previous owners must have really loved it as a plant for them to have allowed so much of it to have taken hold in the garden.
If you want to try something really strong get some Rosate36 - available from a well known online retailer starting with Amaz..
It's still glyphosphate but much, much stronger. Use no more than 30ml Rosate per Litre of water.
I killed everything in an area 30ft x 30ft that was a mass of brambles, nettles, docks etc etc. AND Ivy!
Using Rosate36 I applied 3 times over 3 months.
Everything down there is now dead - and awaiting my new greenhouse

Thank you, Pete8.
I will seek some of that Rosate 36 out now from the mysterious company you refer to.
Good luck, it takes a few weeks to work its way through the plant, but I was surprised at how effective it was. I've tried roundup on ivy before and it had no effect - the Rosate killed the lot, but it took 3 applications. Most stuff will be dead with 1 or 2 sprayings.

Many thanks, Pete.
It sounds like a very dangerous weedkiller to use but I will play safe when I apply it.
