roses

I have a new rose with a growth from near the base is this a succulent?  It has seven leaves but no flowers

    its signs of a sucker, succulents are something entirely different.

    suckers grow from below the union graft joint (the bump on the stem close to the floor where the top growth variety and the root stock meet)) they are usually long and very spikey (looking different to the tops parts growth)

    pull them off, don't cut them, as you can never get close enough to the stem. mulch around your rose until the graft is below the soil level as this can help reduce suckers

    It's a myth that suckers have seven leaves - lots of roses have seven leaves - depending on their ancestry.

    Also lots of the modern David Austin-type bush roses send up long straight shoots from below ground.  Some people mistake these for suckers and remove them which spoils the plant. 

    However, if you have a standard rose with new shoots from below the graft these need removing as Treehugger has described.   Although, if it is a standard the graft is likely to be towards the top of the stem.
