To be a true gardener you must be willing to get muddy, and have patience! Just watch all those people who every year go to B&Q and buy instant colour for their garden. That's not gardening. That's decorating.
To be a good gardener and not just a gardener you must have many things
You must have an undying love for plants
You must be able to sing along to Elton John and abba even if you are completely out of tune
You must have a real keen eye to spot those plants that need your immediate attention
You must be bold enough to say it's time to cut you down to earth
You must be waterproof
You must like talking to yourself
But most of all you must be able to get out of bed in the morning with an aching back hips and stiff fingers and still look forward to work your magic to enhance gods creations into a show of beauty.
Perseverance and adaptability. A lot of gardening is trial and error, but you need the energy and enthusiasm to keep going when things dont go according to plan.
I have a signed copy of a book by Geoffrey Smith. A friend bought it for me when I was about 20. When she asked him to dedicate it to me, he asked how old I was. He also said I must have lots of patience. No. I still get impatient waiting for the seeds to germinate or a plant to emerge in Spring. Patience is not one of my qualities. I want it NOW.

I'd be more measuring him up for the compost bin if he said something like that to me!
Optimism, patience or stubbornness, attention to detail, joy in simple pleasures. And of course thirst for knowledge and interest.
Money. I've just returned from the garden centre with a much lighter wallet.

@clarington,
He thinks compost bin is unhygenic and i should get rid of it ?
i have a long way to become true gardener. In past one year i have learned
- ability to handle slimy and disgusting creatures
- i must continue weight trainibg in gym to have the strength to turn compost and move around heavy pots and composts
- get over the failures and learn from them

One thing that no one has mentioned is that you must have a liking for CAKE.
Well how can a gardener visit the Gc and not have a coffee and a great wedge of cake.
