Carrots splitting
in Fruit & veg
Can anyone tell me why my carrots are only about 2 inches long and splitting badly lengthways before they have a chance to grow properly? They're in a raised bed which was well fertilised and watered every 2-3 days. Despite this though, they taste lovely.

I think you're right. There are parsnips in the same bed and they have taken over. It may be that the poor carrots didn't get enough water regularly enough. I did notice how quickly the beds dried out.
However, I have heard that when tomatoes split it's because they have been given too much water...
That's my biggest mistake then. The soil was pretty good quality but I added compost to it as well and planted the seeds immediately. I think maybe next year I'll use pots and see how they fair using the soil from this year. Thank you for your advice ?.
I thought stony soil was the main reason fro carrots splitting Verd?
It's a long time since I've grown any, and I usually grew in containers as the soil's heavy here, and would have been unsuitable as it's stony too. They were always quite good.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Well, I put the same amount of compost mixed with fish blood n bone in all 3 beds and I got monster Rooster potato plants over 5 foot high (very nice potates though), split carrots of stunted growth and a never ending supply of kale. I have yet to see what the parsips turn out like.
I watered them all every other day mostly, but perhaps that's too much. There may have been some stones in there, but I don't think it was too bad.
Ermmmm, there's a lot of Monty Dons on this site.
Aah - I've misunderstood Verd - it's not like me...honest guv....
