Pruning clematis
I have two Elizabeth Montana clematis which I planted 2 years ago. I was ill last year and didn't do any gardening so this year these clematis have gone mad!! Is it too soon to prune them back, or should I wait until the autumn. Also will that stop them flowering next spring? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Montanas don't really get pruned - only needed when they outgrow the area they're in. They're designed to cover larger areas.
Prune now as it will allow the plant to make some new growth and form buds, and you'll get some decent flowers in spring. If you leave it till later you'll get fewer flowers or possibly none depending on what you take off.
Ideally prune after flowering to tidy up if required
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Many thanks - I will prune tomorrow, and tidy up after flowering next year!
Ideal time of year for taking cuttings from montana clematis. All that new wood you will be throwing away, try a few as backup, a good plant montana Elizabeth.
