Grey Powder in soil

Whilst digging around an old tree in my garden I found a grey/blue dust like substance in the soil. Any help in what this might be and what might have caused it. The Dust is in pockets and not all around the tree?

It's likely to be the mycelium of a fungus that is breaking down organic matter in the soil.  Did it smell 'mushroomy'?

Yes and I did see what looked like pale large mushrooms at the base of the tree earlier in the year.

    Many thanks
