Planting a tree in raised bed??

Hi

Ive recently moved into a new house and have been digging up the garden this weekend to install a raised bed so that I could plant a tree that needs a sheltered position (next to a brick shed.)

This part of the garden is partly under patio and partly under pebbles. After digging out the pebbles I think Ive found out why the previous owner flagged the whole area. The soil is very heavy clay that is pretty rocky also. I've dug down about a foot and was hoping to raise the bed another foot. then fill the hole with shop bought top soil. the hole is approx. 6ftx6,1/2ft and will be 2ft deep.

Am I doing this right to plant a tree? Do I need to dig deeper? I'm keen but a complete novice when it comes to gardening. The tree is a Snakebark Maple and I have read that it will grow on clay. Will it be ok to fill the hole with top soil or do I need to mix with the original clay? Or am I kidding myself!

I now have a big hole in my garden and really don't know what to do next so any help, I'd really appreciate.

Many thanks in advance

Sven

I think it'll be fine too, but I'd try and mix your new soil and grit with the clay a bit, and make sure the clay is broken up well enough to allow good drainage. You don't want it sitting in a puddle  image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
